My name is Christopher Woods. I can be reached at the following email address: christopher.woods.2006@anderson.ucla.edu. My great-great grandfather, William Wood was born 5 Feb 1828 in Eckford (William’s son, John Lee Roy ‘Jack’ Woods, my great grandfather, added an ‘s’ to the family name). William immigrated to the United States with a brother. William Wood died in Columbia, Wisconsin, USA on 20 Sep 1897. William Wood’s father, my great-great-great grandfather, is also named William Wood (christened in Eckford on 15 Dec 1794; died in Eckford on 22 June 1862). William Wood’s mother, my great-great-great grandmother is Mary Nichol (born about 1795 in Jedburgh; died on 25 Feb 1887 in Eckford). My great-great-great-great grandfather is John Wood (christened 20 Jan 1765 in Eckford). John Wood’s wife is Elspeth Dickson (christened 4 August 1765 in Eckford). John Wood’s father is James Wood, my great-great-great-great-great grandfather. Mary Nichol’s father is Hugh Nichol. Hugh Nichol’s spouse is named Margaret. Elspeth Dickson’s father is William Dickson. Elspeth’s mother is Helen Paterson (christened 28 May 1740 Episcopal, Peterhead, Aberdeen, Scotland). Helen Paterson’s father is John Paterson. Please contact me if you have any information related to the Wood, Nichol, Dickson, or Paterson families.

Last January, after comparing Scottish and US records, I discovered that my earlier information (from third party research) was incorrect. My great-great grandfather, William Wood, was born in Lanarkshire, not Eckford. Please disregard my earlier post. Thank you - Christopher Woods

From the 1851 Eckford census:

William Wood, age 56, blacksmith (master, employing 1 man and farmer of 4.5 acres)

Mary Wood, age 56, wife

John Wood, age 29, Blacksmith (Journeyman)

William Wood, age 22, agricultural labourer

Elspeth Wood, age 18, employed at home

James Wood, age 13, cow herd

Helen Wood, age 11, scholar

Peter Wood, age 9, son

All born in Eckford except Mary Wood, born in Jedburgh.

These would seem to be your great-great-great grandfather and his family.

Thank you

This is fantastic. I thought I would wait months before receiving a response. Thank you for your efforts on my behalf. I appreciate your kindness. Thanks, Chris Woods

Message received from Andrew Wood:

I have only just stumbled on your webpage about Eckford and the article from Christopher Woods in America.
I afraid he appears to have gone a bit astray, the William Wood born 5.2.1828 he refers to married Mary Thomson in Old Ormiston, parish of Eckford on 31st December 1868 when he was aged 40years.
He died in Eckford on 24th August 1893.
They had three sons, William born 18th April 1869, Andrew, my grandfather, born 16th October 1872, and John, born 30th November 1878, he emigrated to South Africa in 1898 and died there 0n 13th January 1931.
Apart from William's birth I have copies of official records of these events..
