FAIRBAIRNs of Grahamslaw & Caverton
Three of my 3greats grandfathers brothers are recorded in the Gateshaw Session of Morebattle records as having been born in the Parish of Eckford.
My 3 greats is Walter son of Archibald Fairbairn and Alison Crosser.
The siblings concerned were:
James (1794, baptised at Haughead, Archibald and Alison in Grahamslaw)
John (1797, baptised Morebattle, Archibald and Alison of Grahamslaw)
David (1800, Archibald and Alison shown as being of ?Cavers?, Parish of Eckford).
James married firstly Joan FORSYTH then Elizabeth LAIDLAW, moving around Yarrow, Lantonhall and Melrose, at least, and is enumerated in 1841 at Sloethorn Bank, Selkirk Burgh. By 1851 he and Elizabeth are back at Lantonhall.
David married Jane HERD, probably in Swinton & Simprin and emigrated about 1835 to Canada, settling eventually in Mt Morris, Wisconsin.
John's fate is unknown.
Another FAIRBAIRN family recorded in the Gateshaw Session at the time was that of James Fairbairn and Mary Bell/Mabel THOMSON whose son Robert's baptism (1824) is recorded in both the Eckford registers and the Gatewshaw Morebattle records, both describing James and "Mable" as of Caverton Mill.
This James is buried at Morebattle (as is my Walter) and Robert's descendants are widespread.
I would very much love to prove a connection between these two Fairbairn families, and am pinning my hope of finding a direct male line FAIRBAIRN descendant of Robert to join the FAIRBAIRN Surname DNA project

Further information on these families may be found on my website

both of which sites above have contact details in their footers.
The other Eckford connection is from Alison CROSSER above.
I believe that the James CROSER, portioner at Lanton Hill is her brother, given the above James b. 1794 is shown as erecting his headstone at Eckford.
